Princess Bajrakitiyabha

Princess Bajrakitiyabha

Princess Bajrakitiyabha is the daughter of His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn. After earning a Bachelor of Laws from Thammasat University, she continued her education and earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) and a Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) from Cornell Law School. Her dedication to the legal field led to her appointment as a public prosecutor in Thailand, a role she balanced with high-profile international recognition. She served as a UN Women National Ambassador and received numerous honors, including the Medal of Honor from the International Association of Prosecutors, reflecting her global standing as a champion for justice, human rights, and the rule of law.

Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ)

The Thailand Institute of Justice serves as a primary testament to the Princess’s vision of aligning Thai legal standards with international norms. As a driving force behind its establishment, she utilized the institute to promote the "Bangkok Rules"—the United Nations Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non-custodial Measures for Women Offenders. Her work through the TIJ has been pivotal in transforming the institution into a regional hub for research and policy advocacy, focusing on crime prevention and the fair treatment of vulnerable groups within the justice system.

Department of Corrections Museum

At the Department of Corrections Museum, the Princess’s influence is visible through the lens of modernization and humanitarian reform. While the museum preserves the historical and often grim reality of Thailand’s penal history, her contributions emphasize the shift toward rehabilitation over mere punishment. Through her advocacy, the narrative within the corrections department evolved to include her "Kamlangjai" (Inspire) Project, which seeks to provide emotional support and practical life skills to inmates. Her legacy here is one of humanizing the incarcerated, ensuring that the history of the Thai prison system is balanced by a contemporary focus on dignity and social reintegration.

The Central Women's Correctional Institution

The Central Women's Correctional Institution is the most direct site of her hands-on humanitarian work, particularly through the implementation of the "Kamlangjai" Project. This initiative significantly improved the living conditions for pregnant inmates and their newborn children, ensuring they receive proper healthcare and nutrition while in custody. By introducing vocational training programs and mental health support, she helped transform the facility from a place of simple detention into a space where women can prepare for a productive life post-release. Her presence there is felt in the systematic shift toward recognizing the specific gendered needs of female offenders, prioritizing their health and their potential for reform.
