Takian Tia

This area has long been recognised as one of the Eastern region’s last significant coconut cultivation zones. It offers a rich immersion into a traditional coconut-growing community where local wisdom, sustainability, and hands-on learning come together.

The day begins in the Traditional Coconut Village, where participants can walk through expansive coconut groves and learn about the lifecycle of the coconut palm — from seedling to harvest. Local farmers explain how every part of the coconut tree is utilised: the flesh for food and oil, the husk for fibre and dye, the shell for fuel and handicrafts, and the leaves for weaving. This introduction sets the foundation for understanding how the coconut shapes the village’s economy, identity, and environmental practices.

A highlight of the visit is the Coconut Oil Products Workshop. Here, the group observes and takes part in the process of extracting coconut oil using traditional and small-scale modern techniques. Participants can try their hand at transforming freshly pressed oil into practical items such as herbal balms, soaps, or lip care products. The workshop demonstrates how agricultural products are upgraded into value-added goods, supporting community enterprise and sustainable income generation.

In the Natural Dye Cloth Workshop, local artisans introduce the principles of plant-based dyeing. Natural pigments derived from coconut husk, bark, leaves, and other local plants are used to create earthy tones and organic patterns. Participants experiment with folding, tying, and dyeing fabric, producing unique handcrafted textiles while learning about eco-friendly alternatives to chemical dyes. This activity highlights the connection between agriculture, craft, and environmental stewardship.

Creativity continues in the Repurposing Art Workshop, where discarded coconut shells, fibres, and other natural materials are transformed into decorative and functional art pieces. Under the guidance of community members, visitors craft simple ornaments or household items, gaining insight into the village philosophy of minimising waste and maximising resource use. The session illustrates how traditional knowledge aligns closely with contemporary sustainability concepts.

The experience culminates in the Traditional Food Cooking Workshop. Guided by local cooks, participants prepare classic Thai dishes that feature coconut as a central ingredient — from savoury curries enriched with fresh coconut milk to traditional desserts sweetened with palm sugar. Beyond cooking techniques, the session offers stories about family recipes, seasonal ingredients, and the cultural role of food in Thai communal life. Sharing the prepared meal together reinforces the spirit of hospitality that defines the community.
